Our
commitments
Ulysse Nardin is actively engaged in supporting the conservation of the planet with two main priorities. The first involves the purposeful development of innovative recycled and upcycled materials to reduce environmental pollution, while the second entails investing in initiatives committed to safeguarding the ocean.
We innovate with purpose
As pioneers, we focus our research on developing more efficient and responsible materials.

At Ulysse Nardin, innovating with purpose means continually striving to make our processes, products, and materials more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Our approach to innovation is rooted in a deep respect for the planet, aimed at minimizing our ecological footprint while setting new standards in the watchmaking industry.
We focus on the development and implementation of advanced, sustainable materials that reduce waste and environmental impact. This involves extensive research and collaboration with forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to sustainability. By integrating these materials into our designs, we ensure that our timepieces are not only cutting-edge in terms of technology and aesthetics but also in their environmental stewardship.
Our innovation goes beyond materials to encompass every aspect of our production process.
It is about making conscious choices at every step of our journey, ensuring that our legacy is one of responsibility and care for the planet. We prioritize local sourcing and manufacturing to reduce transportation emissions and support regional economies. This commitment to local craftsmanship not only enhances the quality and longevity of our watches but also reinforces our dedication to sustainable practices.

Innovative
Materials
Carbonium®

In 2019, Ulysse Nardin became the first to use Carbonium® in a watch case, showcasing our commitment to innovative and sustainable materials.
Carbonium® is made from the same fibers used for the fuselage and wings of the latest-generation aircraft, sourced from offcuts in the aircraft manufacturing process. It offers a 40% lower environmental impact compared to other carbon composites.

This high-performance, durable and lightweight material not only reduces waste but also reveals the inner beauty of carbon fibers, with a diameter of only 7 µm, forming a unique organic pattern.
Developed by Lavoisier Composites, a French company specializing in innovative materials with a low environmental footprint, Carbonium® boasts an impressive strength-to-lightness ratio. Its superb marbling effect ensures that each watch case is a unique piece.
Carbonium® is used for bezels, barrel covers, and flanks, made entirely of carbon fibers. For the side-parts and case-backs of the Diver 44mm NET, we combine Carbonium® with Nylo®, a recycled material from disused fishing nets, creating a robust and environmentally friendly composite. This innovative approach allows us to create durable, high-performance timepieces while significantly reducing our environmental impact.
Recycled Fishing Nets

At Ulysse Nardin, we are proud to collaborate with Fil and Fab, a startup on the Atlantic Coast in France dedicated to the upcycling of fishing nets.
This innovative partnership focuses on recovering disused nets from French fishing ports and recycling them into polyamide granules known as Nylo®.

These granules are then combined with Carbonium® to create the side-parts and case-back of our Diver NET. This process not only gives new life to old fishing nets but also contributes to reducing ocean waste and promoting sustainability.
By recycling fishing nets and mixing them with Carbonium®, we are able to produce high-quality, durable components while supporting the circular economy and protecting marine environments.
Additionally, we use fishing nets to manufacture partly recycled straps, further extending our commitment to sustainable practices and innovative recycling methods.
Recycled Stainless Steel & Rubber

Our partner is dedicated to producing very high-quality steel with a guaranteed recycled content, setting new standards in sustainability and excellence.
As part of our commitment to using sustainable materials, we source our steel from Voestalpine Böhler. The steel used in the containers of our Diver 44mm NET is 95% recycled and sourced solely from the watch industry. This high-quality recycled steel not only meets our rigorous standards but also significantly reduces our environmental footprint.

Ulysse Nardin is also involved in the development of recycled rubber.
By incorporating recycled rubber sourced from production waste into our products, we aim to reduce environmental impact and promote a more circular economy. The recycled rubber we use is rigorously tested to ensure it meets our high standards for durability and comfort.

Børge Ousland

Explorer, climate activist, writer and adventurer
Norwegian explorer and writer Børge Ousland is a fearless adventurer. The first person to complete solo crossings of both the Arctic and the Antarctic, Børge is curious, confident and carefully organized. Hauling supply sleds weighing nearly 150 kilograms, he has endured limb-freezing temperatures, surprise crevasses and encounters with polar bears during his quests to reach his extreme goals.

Mike Coots

An advocate for marine conservation and legislation
After having his leg torn off by a tiger shark in his native Hawaii, Mike has turned his painful story into a successful career as a champion of the ocean’s apex predators and photographer. His story of survival is legendary. When Mike Coutts was just 18 years he was bodyboarding off of his native island of Kuai when he felt a sharp tug on his leg. A tiger shark had just bitten off his right limb and as it came back for more, Mike punched it in the face, got himself back to shore and not only lived to tell the tale but turned his personal tragedy into an inspirational career of conservation and art.

Sebastian Copeland

British American polar explorer & photographer, environmental activist.
Sebastian Copeland is a photographer who uses his artistic work to communicate messages of urgent global significance. Sebastian’s images have been seen around the world and his books are a reference for modern explorers as well as for those merely curious about the extreme climate; the cold, dry and windblown, least inhabited continent on Earth.
