From its earliest days, the pursuit of accuracy was not simply an ambition but a scientific discipline — one that continues to shape Ulysee Nardin today.
Some places hold time as naturally and gracefully as they hold people. Since 1865, Ulysse Nardin has called Rue du Jardin in Le Locle home. What began as a family workshop devoted to high-precision watchmaking has evolved into the headquarters and historical heart of an independent manufacture, a place where the pursuit of precision and curiosity about time remain constant.
The continuity of this address mirrors the continuity of the Manufacture itself. One of the few independent watch brands at scale, Ulysse Nardin combines traditional chronometry with artisanal métiers d’art, pioneering technologies, innovative complications and state-of-the-art materials — all fully integrated. It is a house that honors its past while exploring what timekeeping, craftsmanship and design can be today.

A Founder Who Chased Accuracy
The Manufacture of Ulysse Nardin was born from an obsession with precision. Born in 1823 into a watchmaking family, Ulysse Nardin founded his workshop in Le Locle in 1846 with a singular ambition: to push the accuracy of his timepieces as far as possible. To measure and refine their performance, he invested in an Houriet astronomical regulator in 1860, an observatory-grade instrument rarely found in a small independent workshop, effectively turning his atelier into a scientific testing laboratory. For Ulysse Nardin, precision could not simply be claimed — it had to be proven. He therefore entered observatory chronometry competitions and international exhibitions, where watches were tested under strict scientific conditions. These trials helped to refine his timepieces and earned numerous awards, reinforcing Ulysse Nardin’s reputation for precision.
After a fire destroyed the original workshop, he moved with his family in 1865 to Rue du Jardin 5, where the family apartment and workshop shared the same building — the site that still stands today. His son Paul-David Nardin later expanded this scientific culture into marine chronometry, introducing the company’s first marine chronometer in 1876, a field where precision allowed no margin for error. By the early 1890s, he realized that such accuracy required full control and built what became the first and only fully integrated Swiss manufacture dedicated to marine chronometers, organized around a Technical Office for engineering and a Regulation Department dedicated to chronometric adjustment. The manufacture operated as both laboratory and production facility, with temperature-controlled regulation rooms ranging from 2°C to over 40°C to test performance in extreme conditions. The building itself expanded in 1882, 1904 and 1918, while production rose from three or four chronometers per year to an average of around 140, eventually exceeding 650 in a single year in the 1950s.

The impact of this integrated system became evident in 1903, when Ulysse Nardin chronometers entered the trials of the Neuchâtel Observatory and took the top seven places. Continuous experimentation followed, with technical innovations such as isochronism springs and bi-metallic balance wheels, while feedback from observatory trials drove ever greater accuracy. For decades, Ulysse Nardin marine chronometers achieved near-zero error rates.
Here, scientific method became industrial precision. Throughout the 20th century, around 100 watchmakers and artisans worked within the same walls, each contributing to the founder’s pursuit of accuracy and reliability. For more than a century, the Manufacture became a global reference in marine chronometry, delivering the world’s most precise navigation instruments — the maritime equivalent of today’s GPS — to more than 50 navies, as well as scientists and explorers worldwide.

The Path of Independence
For five generations, the Nardin family guided the workshop that carried its name. Leadership passed from one generation to the next, along with a belief that precision was not a marketing claim but a discipline. Then the Quartz Crisis unsettled the Swiss watch industry. At a time when many historic names disappeared or were absorbed, Rolf Schnyder, with the collaboration of Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, stepped in. Their arrival did not erase the past. Instead, it opened a new chapter that respected tradition while allowing pioneering experimentation and technical reinvention — a spirit that would later culminate in the arrival of the Freak, which reimagined the architecture of the mechanical movement and demonstrated that the house’s historic culture of innovation remained intact.
Through these transitions, Ulysse Nardin preserved its spirit of independence. However, independence brought responsibility. To stand alone meant building strength across every discipline, from designing and producing its own movements to researching new materials and sustaining traditional crafts. Independence shaped how the manufacture evolved and how it defined advancing progress.
Today, that independence is reflected in a collection that spans different expressions of luxury timepieces. This breadth is possible because the manufacture operates across five sites, each contributing its own expertise.

Silicon technology
In Sion, at Sigatec, co-founded in 2006, engineers push silicon technology to its limits, producing components measured in microns, some thinner than a human hair and harder than steel. This is where Ulysse Nardin achieved a historical milestone with the Freak in 2001, creating the world’s first watch with silicon parts, and laying the foundation for a new era of precision engineering. The environment is far removed from the 19th century workshops, yet the objective remains the same: measurable, reliable and revolutionary performance.

What started as a family workshop focused on precision was transformed by Paul-David Nardin into a scientific manufacture dedicated to the same principle. Today, that philosophy continues to guide the brand across all five of its sites, with each hand, each bench, each experiment contributing to the same pursuit: understanding and mastering time.
